What is a Root Canal?

Root canals are very common procedures that are performed in offices all around the world. The actual procedure involves taking out the nerve, or pulp, inside of a tooth. Once a tooth is severely damaged or decayed, its pulp may need to come out. At Rivers Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, we offer this care in an easy and painless manner.

Why would someone need a Root Canal?

The reason many people require root canals is because a tooth is very severely damaged or decayed. If decay has been able to infect the nerve of the tooth, this can cause severe sensitivity and pain. Likewise, a tooth that’s been damaged in some way may cause the pulp to become compromised or exposed. It is best to have the pulp removed as soon as it’s found you’d benefit from a root canal.

Who is a candidate for a Root Canal?

Dr. Rivers will examine your teeth to see if and when one of your teeth may need a root canal. If you do need one, it is important to get into the office as soon as possible for treatment. This will help to reduce any pain or discomfort that you might be experiencing. Root canals can be done on patients of all ages.

What happens during a Root Canal?

The doctor will first numb your gums around the tooth in need of treatment. A small rubber dental dam is used to keep that tooth isolated completely. The next step for Dr. Rivers is to remove the pulp. This involves removing any decay from the tooth first and then using special tools to extract the pulp from the tooth. The canals of the roots are cleaned out and then filled with special material. You will then have the tooth filled and can leave to go home. Many people who have had root canals done may need to eventually have a crown placed on a tooth.
